Unfortunately, due to the Idalia storm clouds, our area will not be able to view the upcoming Super Blue Moon in person. But, you can catch it online if you stay up a bit.
This Super Blue Moon is different than the typical Blue Moon event. Due to the distance our moon is from the earth at it’s “full moon” time, it makes the moon appear larger, by around 14%. It’s quite rare to have a combination of a Blue Moon and supermoon, which is what is happening tonight. According to NASA, the average time this combo happens can be around 20 or so years apart.
You can follow the “once in a blue moon” event at The Virtual Telescope Project, or Space.com.
Chances are these sites will be extremely busy tonight, so if you plan on watching, you may want to visit your chosen site early.
