The 2013 flu season has already begun, so if you want a flu shot, it’s time to start thinking about getting one.
Here are some places you can get one for free or at a minimal cost:
Your doctor’s office. Under the federal Affordable Care Act, all insurance plans that were created after March 23, 2010, are required to provide flu shots for free (no co-pay required). Even if your plan doesn’t qualify, you may be able to get a shot for the price of a co-pay. If you have Medicare Part B, your flu shot should also be free. Have your doctor’s office contact your insurance company to see if your shot will be covered.
Work. Many employers offer free flu shots because it is less costly than paying for sick days. Ask your Human Resources Director.
The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC). The DHEC offers seasonal flu clinics where people who are uninsured or underinsured can get a flu shot for $25. Their site says, “Please do not let cost prevent you from seeking your flu shot. Ask how we can help.”
The Vaccine for Children’s (VFC) Program. If your child is uninsured, underinsured, Medicaid-eligible, or American Indian or native Alaskan, he or she may be eligible for a free flu shot as part of the federal VFC program. The flu shots are administered by private and public health care providers. If your doctor is not enrolled in the VFC program (make sure you ask), call the South Carolina VFC Coordinator at 803-898-0261 to find a provider near you.
A drugstore. Here are the prices for 2013:
- CVS: $31.99. You’ll also get a 20% off shopping pass (while supplies last).
- Walgreens: $31.99.
- Costco: $16.99.
- Rite-Aid: $29.99. You’ll also get 25 wellness+ points.
