Juneteenth is a celebration of the end of the enslavement of African-American people in the United States.
It took more than two years for word of freedom to get to enslaved people, and freedom is still a process. Some of the Juneteenth events are calls to action, and all encourage community involvement.
It marks the day, June 19th, 1865, when the Emancipation Proclamation (which had been issued on January 1st, 1863) was finally read to enslaved African-Americans in Texas.
Here are some events happening in the Myrtle Beach area to help you celebrate and honor Juneteenth:

The City of Myrtle Beach Neighborhood Services Department hosts the annual Juneteenth Celebration at Charlie’s Place. Come celebrate African-American history with a day of education and entertainment. This event is FREE to attend.

3rd Annual Juneteenth Soul Food Festival
Ms. Margaret’s Soul Food presents the 3rd Annual Juneteenth Soul Food Festival, including food vendors, kids activities, a fried chicken cook-off, and health information. Dates are June 16, 17 and 18, 2023.

The South Carolina African American Heritage Commission has created The Green Book of South Carolina, the first mobile web travel guide to African American cultural sites across the state. It’s a contemporary homage to the original Green Book first published in 1936 that featured safe harbors and welcoming establishments for African Americans throughout the United States.
