I’m sure you’ve heard about the South Carolina back-to-school sales tax holiday. Maybe you’ve participated in previous years. Here’s the scoop.
From Friday, August 6 through Sunday, August 8, 2021, clothing, school supplies, computers, and other items are exempt from from the 6% state sales tax and any applicable local taxes.
These item’s are exempt from sales tax:
- Clothing and clothing accessories (e.g., hats, scarves, hosiery, handbags)
- Footwear
- School supplies (e.g., pens, pencils, paper, binders, notebooks, books, bookbags,
lunchboxes, calculators) - Computers and related items (e.g., printers and printer supplies, computer software)
- Bedding (e.g., blankets, bed spreads, bed linens, sheet sets, comforter sets, pillows, pillow cases)
- Bathroom accessories (e.g., bath towels, wash cloths, shower curtains, bath rugs, bath mats)
- Remember that eligible items are still tax-free if you shop online!
Check with your local retailer to see if they offer online shopping, delivery, or curbside pick-up.
Be prepared for crowds. In past years, South Carolina shoppers have saved 2-3 million dollars during the sales tax holiday weekend. That’s a lot of school supplies!
